Early days in California : Australia, ms., after 1852.

Reminiscences of life in the California gold rush and commentary on Americans, with mention of several important personalities in the American West. His detailed account commences upon entering the Golden Gate in 1850 Aug. following a voyage from Plymouth, Eng. Mentions the sequoias, Calaveras Co., then his travels along the Pacific coast and through the redwoods along the Trinity River to Weaverville and Shasta City, with description of his work in the mines. An extremely well-written narrative, full of interest and appreciation for nature and an awareness of social conditions in his surroundings during his two years in California.

James W. Denver was born near Winchester, Virginia. He attended public schools and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1830, settling near Wilmington. In 1841 he taught school in Missouri, and in 1844 he graduated from the law school of the University of Cincinnati. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law near Xenia, Ohio.
